IRON RIVER, MICHIGAN – June 15, 2026) Morgan Murphy Media’s Queen Bee’s Knees LLC announced today that WFER 97.9 FM (W250CQ) and WFER 1230 AM will cease broadcasting June 15 after more than seven decades serving Iron River, Michigan.
The station first signed on Nov. 15, 1949, as WIKB and has served generations of listeners in Iron County and across the western Upper Peninsula. In recent years, 1230 AM operated as WFER alongside sister station WIKB-FM 99.1.
The decision comes after engineers determined the station’s broadcast tower in Caspian, Michigan, has structural damage that makes it unsafe for continued operation.
“We’re proud of WFER’s history and the role it has played in listeners’ daily lives throughout the Iron River area,” said Jeff Harju, General Manager. “While WFER’s broadcast signal will go silent, our commitment to this region continues. We’re redirecting our resources to strengthen our other radio stations and streaming platforms that serve this community.”
Listeners can continue enjoying a wide variety of Morgan Murphy Media programming, including high school sports coverage and contests, through WIKB-FM 99.1 and the company’s streaming services. Updates about My979fm.com streaming and special-event broadcasts will be announced shortly.
